What conditions can be treated with therapeutic laser therapy?

Therapeutic laser therapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions. The most common conditions that are treated at home are related to chronic pain and include: arthritis (including secondary to hip/elbow dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament injuries, and other causes), neuropathies, back and muscle pain, and degenerative disk disease. Other conditions can be treated such as: acute and chronic otitis (ear infections), gingivitis and periodontal diseases, hot spots and skin inflammation, sprains/strains, burns, wounds, post-surgical relief, fractures, and many more. The ActiVet Pro also can help treat superficial infections with antimicrobial blue light.

How does therapeutic laser therapy work?

Therapeutic laser therapy (also known as cold laser therapy) works by delivering light energy to damaged cells. This energy is delivered in the form of photons which are absorbed by the cells and stimulate the mitochondria to produce ATP and induce cellular repair. Laser light can also can help assist in pain reduction by initiating the body's natural healing pathways. This process not only decreases inflammation and pain, but also causes temporary dilation of small blood vessels called capillaries. This extra blood flow brings oxygen,  fuel, and other healing agents to the injured tissue.

What does an initial laser therapy consult entail?

All of our laser consults are conducted in the comfort of your own home. Our consult fee includes the cost of any travel to and from your home (as long as you are in our service area listed here), review of any previous veterinary records, an examination with Dr. Moran, the development of a treatment protocol for future appointments, and your pet's first laser treatment. Dr. Moran may also suggest additional therapy such as pain medications, environmental changes, fluids, diet changes, or other treatment if warranted. This appointment usually lasts about an hour and can be booked online on our booking calendar here. At your first appointment we will develop a laser treatment plan and schedule your next in home treatments (these cannot be scheduled online). Additional follow-up laser visits usually last about 20 minutes.

How many treatments are needed and how long will it take to see results?

Acute conditions often only need to be treated for 1-6 treatments. More chronic conditions like arthritis usually require 10-12 treatments. Some animals with chronic conditions will require periodic maintenance doses every few weeks to once a month. You will typically see an improvement in your pet's pain right away. Laser therapy works at the cellular level and is effective at promoting rapid healing.

How often are treatments performed and how long do they take?

Acute conditions are often treated daily, especially if there is significant pain. Most chronic issues are treated initially 2-3 times a week for 2 weeks, then tapered to once a week. Animals with severe chronic conditions may need a maintenance dose every other week or once a month. Each treatment takes about 5-15 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated.
